There are a few too many exclamation marks. Also the lack of any other information besides "Boxed, warranty product!" is a bit shady.

Explosions in the Sky is a great band. I love listening to them while I'm a bit higher up if you know what I mean.

Also up for mention is Caspian and Mogwai

so you brought the 500mzh motherboard and just stuck it in, and it worked fine cool
    ;)

Assuming this works, you still won't be able to run Rise of Nations since the 500MHz iMac has a 16MB Rage Ultra - you need a 32MB video card.

Do you know by any chance how to downgrade?

    Yes I do! :D

    1. Go to http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/. Then scroll down to iPhone / iPod touch / iPad / Apple TV and then click the arrow to scroll down and select your device and firmware. Then click download and save it to your desktop or downloads folder.

    2. Go to http://thefirmwareumbrella.blogspot.com/ and on the right you can download TinyUmbrella according to your operating system. Save this to desktop or downloads folder.

    3. Go to http://ih8sn0w.com/index.php/products/view/ireb.snow and download iREB RC4 according to your operating system and unzip the file to your desktop.

    4. Once all downloads are complete plug in your device and run iREB. Then choose your device, and follow the instructions to get into PWNED DFU mode. Then open TinyUmbrella and click on Start TSS Server. These programs will bypass a few errors in iTunes when you are downgrading.

thats a absolute bargain i take 10 for that price , payed 1470 for mine ,ok mine was complete in original box as shipped from apple in May 1998 to the owner in germany and still in pristine as new condition like it left the factory , apart from i also bought a g3 upgrade card from sonnet for it and a 50gb harddrive , mates call me insane why i spend that much money on a obsolete old piece of computer rather then getting a brandnew mac ..but i simply love the pre intel Mac's and they do what i buy them for
and honestly it looks better then a iMac 27" and has way better sound and is rarer :p

WOW! that is a hell of a price. I thought 700 for mine with an upgrade was tasty!

I went to the website and checked as far down as iTunes 10.2 but they are all listed as being for Windows. Any for the Mac?

Grrr. Sorry about that. Used to work.

You're a star! I just tested it with my hotmail address and it works but its not going to my other email which it needs to, any ideas?

Its not even landing in the trash...

Email can be a pain.... your other account could be trashing it, who knows... try to get as simple and basic as you can with your testing. I also use phpmailer you might want to look into that. Good luck.

No, but you could do a block copy restore of the install DVD to a small partition on either its drive, or an external HD connected to that machine.

If the 2nd machine is an Intel Mac, its drive will be partitioned using a GUID map. PPC Macs can't boot to a drive using that map - it must be APM. So, if the preceding is true, you will need an external drive partitioned using APM (in the Disk Utility "Partition" tab, click on "Options..." to set the map type).

To make the bootable copy on your other machine's HD (or external drive), run Disk Utility and create a small (10GB should be enough) partition formatted Mac OS Extended (also making sure to set APM as the partition map type). Then, use Restore to copy the DVD to that new partition, making sure to check "erase destination" (which enables block copy).

Start up your other (2nd) Mac using FireWire Target Disk mode (hold down 'T' at startup). Now, when you startup the iMac G4, hold down the 'option', then select the partition you cloned the DVD to on your other machine. You should be able to startup on it, and during install, select the iMac's HD as the install target.

Hope that's not too confusing - I mixed "other" and "2nd" when describing your not-iMac-with-working-DVD machine. The bottom line is to access a bootable partition on that machine that you can boot off of using that machine in Target Disk Mode, connected to the iMac via FireWire.

Or, find an external FireWire DVD drive for the iMac. :)

Wouldn't another option be to use the DVD drive from the 2nd mac in target disk mode, even if the 2nd mac is Intel?

Sounds like your dv camcorder is your only option, provided iMovie recognizes it. Do a quick clip, then see if you can import.
Since the camcorder doesn't have record in, about the only thing you can do is play the movie in a quiet room and record it with the camcorder. Won't be the best quality, but you will be able to get it on the Mac, provided iMovie recognizes it. What kind of camcorder is it? Another option is find someone with a camcorder that has the ability to record in. My Sony SR100 does this, buts the quality isn't the greatest.

I have already tried moving files in and out of FileVault and creating empty disk images and deleting them but nothing has brought the optimization dialog back when I log out.
I do have a backup of my data (it's about two weeks old). It's on an external harddrive in Iceland (I'm on vacation in Germany now) and just a mirror of the disk before I turned FileVault on. I do not want to lose all the changes I made during the last two weeks, though - and I also can't clear the external harddrive for a new backup, since I had to delete many huge files on the Powerbook in order to turn FileVault on in the first place.

I also had to move my entire iTunes folder to my iPod - leaving me all without music (I deleted it on my Mac and cleaned my iPod before I manually copied the Music folder). I copied a few songs back from my iPod to my PB, though.

    I hate FileVault.

Dodgy methods? Couldnt you have just signed up for a US iTunes account and downloaded it, then switched back to your normal one? That's how most non-US people got it easly.

    AnDy

You need a credit card to register for an iTunes account and for some reason I think (read: think, not know) Apple has limited it to one credit card per account so I can't really do that.

Regional limiting is stupid, it's like DRM.

Just pointing out the cost/benefit ratio. In this case, way too money is spent protecting something that doesn't cost a lot. I see protection for shuffles as a waste of money.

This is indeed a well known issue with cubes. Some people were affected immediately, and others only after a period of time like you.

My cube has a 'seizure' about once every 4 months and it will do this for an hour or two and then correct itself and be fine again.

There have been numerous causes and solutions suggested and it appears that different things work for different machines.

The usual cause is the proximity switch - the touch sensitive one on top of the cube. Most people report that the switching on and off is caused by a badly fitting or loose gasket around this switch inside the cube.

Some people say that making sure this gasket is seated firmly will cure the problem, and others have had this replaced (for free) by Apple.

I have never found this to be the case with mine, it just seems to have a mind of its own, for short spells every now and again.

Some people have also reported that this happens on hot days or when the air-con is swithed off. I've not noticed this (as I live in the UK it never gets hot!).

There have been hundreds of discussions on this topic since the cube was introduced and you can probably find some useful info on the web.

I'm not sure why Apple have not provided more help on this topic given what a widespread issue it was/is, but I just searched Google for "Apple Cube Switch problem" and it came back with a lot of links. Bear in mind that the solution for one cube may not help yours! I guess this is the price we have to pay for having the coolest computer the world has ever seen :D

    Cheers,
    Dobbin

Yep! Don't rely on the Best Buy web site. I called around and they had the new iMac's in stock and on sale! Just picked mine up.

    On sale by how much?

They were on sale for about $100 less than normal. Not much but hey, that's one less payment I have to make

Does this script run for an unusually long time or something? I believe the default timeout for MySQL is around 8 hours.

Your code below is calling mysql_ping, but your error message is for mysqli_ping, make sure you are using the right type of connection.

mysql_ping will not do automatic reconnection, however mysqli_ping will if you set the mysqli.reconnect option in php.ini or your code.

Sorry, I just typed up the test cases I had used from memory quickly and copied and pasted (poorly). It is actually using mysqli_ping in the real tests. Thanks for pointing it out. I corrected this in my original post

8 hours is far too long of a timeout for our busy website. We are running a 30 second timeout right on the database out of necessity. Otherwise the resources sit there and are never released and aren't reallocated and used quickly enough.

I know mysqli_ping won't auto-reconnect (at least in some versions of PHP no matter what option you set), I just use it to test if the connection is still open. If not, I grab a new connection. Even if the ping worked and autoreconnected, the code would be fine. I just can't figure out why sometimes it tosses that error, or how to test for it beforehand.
