No... it amounted to some spectacular Northern Lights displays. My wife showed me bunch that were captured last night and posted to the web.... I don't know where she found them.... but they were spectacular. :)

OMG! That picture is insane.

trim is only supported on SSD's that you buy from apple, and only recently.

As the other poster said, there haven't been problems with people running 3rd party SSD's w/o trim enabled. In fact some users have reported problems with their drives after enabling trim support.

If you really feel you must have it, search the boards, there is a tutorial here on how to enable it through some simple command lines.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe SSD's with the Sandforce controller such as the Vertex 3 don't need TRIM as the controller takes care of this function.

I would only transfer OS X and apps so in Migration Assistant, simply don't include the users folder and whatever takes a lot space. After migration, move the other data from the other computer/external to the HD.

You can also point your Home folder to the HD which makes managing an SSD and HD pretty easy.

I really, really, really love my lamp, the old G4, but started university this month and realized fairly quickly that something portable would come in handy.

Now the question is, what to get. I'm considering a few options:

Get additional iBook 14" (But isn't that too small and slow?)
Get additional PB 15" (But that'll be bloody expensive )
Sell old faithfull G4, buy PB 15" + 20 " display for home use (anyone happy with that solution???)

Also I was wondering, If I get a new machine running Tiger, and keep the old running Panther, won't it be annoying to work with two different OS'es?
(can't use Tiger disc for portable to install Tiger on iMac G4, can I?)

    Any advice appreciated

    -Squirrel

Well what will you use it for, what apps will you run? The ibook is not slow, the only time it will be slow is for running some pro apps such as FCP. Also you might want to consider the 12" ibook since the 14 and 12 inch have the same resolution.

can someone please explain, I think I'm missing something

In my experience Maddow and Cooper are at least tolerable.

Of the names listed in the thread, Cooper's probably my pick for the best. Maddow doesn't even attempt to stay neutral. I was watching her coverage when Scott Walker won in Mass; she sounded like she'd just come from her best friend's funeral.

I've been adding articles of products announced at Macworld, but it seems it doesn't work for products with an apostrophe in their name. I added both iLife '06 and iWork '06, but neither of those pages show are world editable, regardless of whether I use "%27" or "'" in the links. Is this fixable arn?

...and can we make it a bulleted list without destroying the majik?

Been in the process of ripping and encoding my DVD collection to the Mini for about a month now. Have been using Handbrake only to do the entire process so far, and usually can only get about 3 a day after work.

Today decided to try Rip It to pre-rip a bunch and the queue them up in Handbrake so I can leave it running. The Rip It part has gone really well as I ripped 15 DVD's in a row in a matter of hours.

But now have started the encoding part, and Handbrake is crawling!:(

When I was using Handbrake for the entire process I was averaging around 30 fps. But now I have all rips queued up and the first is doing around 10 fps! What's the deal? I figured it would be faster encoding from HD instead of DVD.

Also tried to encode Hunt for Red October and it says "Suspected RCE Region 1". Is there any way to remove the region from ripped file?

Hopefully someone has been through this before and can help me out.

I have been a PC user for basicly my entire life, but I have never exactly been happy with it. The thing would crash, have the BSoD, but that is not really why i switched.

Basicly I got tired of the Windows Operating System, Bill Gates, and the millions of PC Viruses. I needed a notebook for college in the fall, and I picked up a 17" PowerBook G4 because it suites all of my needs and it replaces the need for a desktop for quite some time. I have enjoyedm first week as a Mac User because everything has worked so well, and I am actually used to all of the windows opened at the same time now! (I never understood before untill I actually spent hours upon hours with the thing)

I have now become addicted to iTunes and have puchased 68 songs in my first week. :D Another reason why I wanted the Mac is because of Final Cut Pro. I love watching and making movies so I felt that the Mac would be the best thing for me... The last movie I made was on my Pentium 4 box and I nearly threw it out of the window because it was so evil... Hopefully the Mac is more kind. I have not started to edit video on my Mac yet, but that is because I have not had the time.

I like my "little" 17" PowerBook because it works great and everyone I have shown it off to has been really amazed by it.

Nice shot, would be nice if there were less clouds around the mountain as it covers a lot of it up and is distracting. Plus would use just a very slight increase in vibrancy just to make the colours pop a bit more. also slightly increase contrast through Levels... again only a touch. that's only from my personal point of view though. Here's a slight adjustment for what it's worth.. http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/7536/editedu.jpg

That was the least amount of clouds all week. Typically the top is covered. I like the adjustment.

I haven't started using a photo editing program yet. I wanted to get a good handle on the photography first.

I guess I'm even more lame in Terminal than I thought. The volume name is "New Volume" and I'm having trouble changing to the correct directory. Terminal keeps telling me No such file or directory.

I've been carefully monitoring the processor loads on my c2d macbook (the black one) to see what kind of processor I would be needing if I buy an air. The decision is really between the 1.86 and 2.13

    My loads are:
    1.03 .93. 87

These are with chrome and itunes and terminal running along with ical and the likes. nothing too heavy.
    Any advice on which processor?

I am looking for a thin yet robust rubberish/silicon skin for my latest iPod touch 4G. It should have a single black or dark gray color and not not have any pimples or ripples.

Simply put: as unobstrusive and robust as possible.

Also the iPod touch still needs to fit into the apple universal dock.

    Wich skin would you suggest?

I have a laptop that might suit your needs. It's this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=164909) one.

If the price is right, I'd be willing to sell it. I will add some pictures tonight. The included pic is what the laptop looks like. Mine is in pretty good condition. There are only a few scratches on it.

I have 3 of them.

    White one sold in Japan
    Black one sold in USA
Grey one sold in Europe (KMP 2000), rarest of bunch.

A bunch of Pippin software, accessories, memory, and about 100 titles.

One day I will unpack and take pictures of them all. :)

MKJJ: WOW, nice collection! Especially a KMP Dev unit!
I see you have the 16MB memory module, that the one I sold you?
